Class Teacher – Mr Anthony Tugwell
I aim for my classroom to be a place where all pupils and adults feel confident and comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas. It is a space where children understand that the more they put into their learning, the more they will get out of it. I want my classroom environment to encourage children to set high expectations for themselves while supporting and demonstrating our school values.
In English, the class will study fiction, non-fiction, and poetry to develop their understanding of a wide range of genres. This will also support pupils in planning, drafting, and improving their own pieces of writing. Each term, every child will deliver a talk to the class on a chosen subject, helping them develop their skills in engaging an audience and strengthening their speaking and listening abilities.
In Year 4, reading is encouraged through shared reading sessions that introduce pupils to a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. They engage in discussions, share their favourite books, and explore new authors to develop a love of reading. Dedicated independent reading time and access to a diverse class library help build their confidence and enthusiasm as readers.
In Mathematics, key concepts such as place value and basic arithmetic from lower down the school are built on and developed. The children also develop their understanding of fractions and begin learning about decimals. They will develop and consolidate their understanding of column addition and column subtract and will begin to understand how to use long and short multiplication.
