French

Intent

At Shiplake, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages.

We aim to

  • Introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways.
  • Embed the essential skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
  • Build the children’s ‘culture capital’ so that they are aware of similarities and differences between cultures.
  • Lay the foundations for future language learning.

Implementation

Teaching and Learning

Our MFL curriculum has been designed to progressively develop skills in French. We are currently using the CGP Plus units to deliver our French lessons. These ensure children acquire a bank of vocabulary organised around topics. They ensure development is progressive as they build on previous knowledge from units already studied. Children then use their newly acquired language to build sentences.

All children in KS2 are taught French in a bi-weekly discreet lesson. This is delivered by the class teacher or another qualified teacher. We are lucky enough to have a good working relationship with the local secondary school and receive advice around delivery from their French department.

CGP Plus includes progress checks to ensure that children are advancing appropriately.

Impact

  • French is being taught using the new scheme CGP Plus.
  • Teachers are more confident teaching French across KS2.
  • Children are engaged in lessons and participating orally with enthusiasm.
  • Communication with a French school is being researched by MFL lead to open up the world for the children.
  • Topics covered are relevant to the children’s experiences and useful for their future.
